Syntax Description:
type Interface type
number Interface number

Command Description:

To enable IP processing on a serial interface without assigning an explicit IP address to the interface, use the ip unnumbered interface configuration command. To disable the IP processing on the interface, use the no form of this command.


Example:
Router(config-if)#ip unnumbered fastethernet 0/0
  

Misconceptions:

The ip unnumbered command is intended for serial interfaces; a common misconception is that ip unnumbered works with all physical and link layer standards. It does not, for example, work with smds or x25.
